The tiny metal box bobbed in the water before her, fragile and vulnerable, but quite bright. She didn't want to hurt it.
Well, all right, she had been a little rude, when she had heard it talking to someone else. Her kind's natural abilities allowed her to disrupt waves of many varieties, and startled by the signal, she had pulsed a flash of bright bioluminescence that knocked out their transmission.
It had been out of surprise. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her once before, and she had found a pod of hungry orcas. The undulating fin on her left side had been the price of that lesson.
Nevertheless, the smooth little creature was fascinating. It bobbed in the water like a nautilus, ungainly yet confident. She looked at it from every angle, brushing her fingertip along its smooth alien surface, looking at the - oops!
It was covered in metal twigs like a crab's claws, and she'd carelessly broken one. Embarrassed, sheepish, her lights went out and she retreated back into the black depths. A minute later, she loomed out from the gloom, once again before the creature. She brought it a gift of lovely coral, a tiny little twig roughly the same size and shape as the arm she'd snapped off. She stifled a giggle as she saw its remaining arm holding the severed claw, and gently placed the coral in a little basket on the front of the creature. She smiled shyly, as her cuttlefish-like fins drew her backwards, and then she was gone.

"Christ, AU17, we've been trying to reach you for half an hour now! What the hell happened to your comms?!"
"Uh, it's been - erm - "
There was a moment of static.
"Technical malfunction, Surface. Arm got caught. We, uh, discovered a new species of, uh, coral though..."

My entry into the
Mer-May theme! This one was a big departure for me in terms of style and I tried to practice a few techniques for an upcoming work. Won't say it all went according to plan, but it was just so much fun that I may have to revisit this theme.
